June 21 Moving outThe decorators have finished painting Katie's room.
The carpet arrives at the start of July.
Then Katie can move into her room.
Small matter of no furniture but, let's face it, she won't notice. Teething troubleIs Katie teething?
Whatever it was it kept her and us awake most of the night.
And yet late morning she slept like, er, a baby for two hours. Bottling itKatie has so far shown no interest in anything Urs or I consume.
She's happy to be breastfed and kicks up a huge fuss if offered formula in bottle.
And yet the other day Urs was drinking some water out of a bottle and Katie grabbed at it and put the spout in her mouth, as she does with almost anything (Pinky Parrot, Purple Dolphin, any of her books, muslin squares and many, many more included).
How many times have we tried to get her take the spout of a bottle of formula???
But maybe now this incident points the way to get her to take a bit of formula from a bottle unwittingly... Will Pinky Parrot retire at 65?Pinky Parrot, a character who can be attached to the activity mat that uncle Rob bought his niece, can now recite the periodic table of elements up to terbium, the 65th element.
It's getting harder for him (aka me) to remember the names as they become ever more arcane.
And sometimes Katie is playing on a different mat which Pinky can't be attached to so he doesn't get to play as often as he used to.
Only 53 left, Pinky.
Keep going.
You know she'll thank you in years to come.
Background to this nonsense:
You will recall, of course, that to prevent Katie ending up in the Asbo generation (according to a recent report kids who go to nursery, which she will do in a few months' time, are apparently more likely to become anti-social - a claim I do not take seriously, as you have probably worked out) it has been decided that she will improve her brainpower, sociability and chances of answering questions on University Challenge by learning the periodic table of elements. And Pinky Parrot, a character on her activity mat, is the one chosen to recite the table to Katie. Unfortunately he has to learn the elements too so progess is fitful. June 18 Father's DayMy first Father's Day yesterday.
What a proud moment.
Katie (with a little help from her mummy, no doubt) bought me a t-shirt.
She got herself a matching one, too.
Well, actually she got two - one for now and one to grow into.
I suppose if I'd been given two on the same basis that would have been a bit worrying!
Pic below. June 16 A handy smileToday when I went to pick her up out of her cot Katie gave me that lovely smile AND stretched her arms and hands out towards me as if to invite me to hold her.
Very cute. Roll playingKatie can now roll.
A bit.
From a position of lying on her back she can roll onto her side.
This works well when she rolls to the right but she doesn't roll to the left yet.
I spent some time training her this morning to roll leftwards so it's only a matter of time... June 15 Train painI left the office in good time last night.
Three hours later I got home.
Some power failure or something further up the line.
A rail journey that ends up involving a 'special bus service' is never a good thing.
Result: Urs spent most of the evening on her own and I didn't get to see Katie before she went to bed.
No train delay compensation form will get back the time lost. June 12 Coincidentally...We went for a curry on Sunday evening - Katie's first visit to a curry house.
Bit of a gamble as spicy food from mummy isn't always popular but it seemed to go OK.
The chap at our local curry house came over for a chat.
"How old is she?"
Almost four months, we said.
"Really? Which month was she born?"
We told him.
"Wow. Which day?"
We told him.
"Which hospital?"
We told him.
"My son was born an hour earlier on the same day at the same hospital."
Now there's a coincidence that doesn't happen every day, eh?
They were in a different ward so we didn't see them, not that I spend my time looking for that nice chap from the curry house when I'm hanging round maternity wards...which, er, I don't do very often anyway. June 08 New weightGot a text message today:
"Hello Daddy. I've put on 3.5oz in 9 days. I now weight 11lb 6oz. Love Katie x."
A question of national importanceWhen it comes to choosing which football club to support Katie will clearly be - and already is, really - a Wycombe Wanderers fan.
But which country will she follow?
Will it be England like her dad?
Or Poland like her mum?
Well, all I can say is that I have recenty been wearing my England shirt and on two occasions while cuddling with me Katie clearly kissed the three lions badge.
Debate over?
I'd like to think so but I know I cannot afford to be complacent in such matters.
Perhaps Katie will find a diplomatic solution... June 07 Smile pleaseWent to Katie's cot to pick her up yesterday and got the world's loveliest smile.
Ever. June 04 Blame it on the buggyA great moment on Sunday afternoon.
There we were in the city centre doing some relaxed shopping and wandering about.
Urs went into a well-known dispensing chemist and I hung around outside.
I noticed two other couples nearby. They both had the same make of buggy (Phil and Ted's) as us.
It suddenly felt like the more senior version of teenagers meeting to compare modified cars on a Friday night before going for a burn-up (or whatever they call it these days).
We had only one baby in our buggy whereas they both had two and so were using the double seat functionality. They had the grey colour buggy. We had the black. I had the sun protector over the buggy. They had nothing.
And to top it all one of the dads strolled over in my direction. He asked: "Did those mudguards come as standard?" June 03 Cakeman's photosTony took some nice photos when he and his cakes visited.
By the way, I got through the entire packet of Battenbergs and am now on to the chocolate shortbread. Look who's talkingKatie has suddenly decided that it's time to start talking.
Well, OK, the words are more "Aaaah" and "Ooooh" than actual words but when our neighbours popped round yesterday she gave them a full rendition.
Very impressive it was too. |
