    New weight

Urs took Katie to the Health Visitor* today.

Katie has put on 3oz in six weeks so her new weight is 18lbs 1.5oz.

The visit was actually prompted by a rash on Katie's body and gunk in her eyes.

Urs was told that it was a post-viral rash which babies get when they've had viruses (unlike adults).

The eye gunk (or conjunctivitis, if you prefer) is to be treated with antibiotic eye drops.

The Health Visitor said that although Katie isn't yet 20lbs (9 kilos) she is ready to go into a forward-facing car seat now as she can sit up for more than 20 minutes and the harness could be adjusted so it could be suitably tight.

    * It's odd how we visit the Health Visitor, isn't it?

No, she isn't sleeping through the night

Katie's top teeth (well two of them, perhaps) are struggling to come through and we're struggling to sleep as Katie keeps waking up and needs comforting and feeding. This obviously is tougher for Urs than me.

So if you're about to ask me if Katie sleeping through the night (as many people do - and, yes, I know they mean well) the answer will be: "No. She isn't."

But we'd like it if she did Smile .

Instead she's so tired out by these night time woes that she's sleeping more in the day.

    A wrestling match

We went to a fun first birthday party last weekend.

It was the the first of what you might expect will be a long line of first birthday bashes but in fact some of the mums have decided to organise a joint event next month.

Anyway, it was a small event and we had a good time. I wished we could have stayed longer but the bus timetable didn't allow for that.

Some of Katie's friends were there, including Ceris.

The two of them see each other at nursery every week and are earning something of a partners in crime reputation.

We hear they sometimes, er, compete for toys and when they're put in the same cot at sleeptime not much sleeping happens as they're too busy reciting the elements of the periodic table (well, OK, they're probably just babbling).

At the birthday bash it looks Katie lost the wrestling match this time although to her credit she did valiantly hold on to her biscuit.

Ah, friends...  Katie loses a wrestling match

    Nappy count reaches 1,843

    48 weeks down.

Looks like her first birthday will arrive before the 2,000 barrier is broken.

    Dou-dou returns

Last week I bought another dou-dou from Petit Bateau in London.

    I even got 20% off - a bargain for, er, £12.

Fact is, without dou-dou Katie doesn't sleep.

£12 for peace and quiet and a happy baby?

    Priceless.

A reminder of what it's like if dou-dou (or "The Doudster" as he/she/it is known) is out of reach (and that's not even an in-the-cot shot):

    can't reach dou-dou. Boo hoo.

    Barf time - extreme

    Oh dear.

Katie has been heavily sick twice today - the contents of her stomach (and she ate a lot yesterday) came back up in glorious technicolour.

She's not very energetic and not her usual smiley self.

I wonder if the norovirus vomiting bug has hit?

She's gone back down for an afternoon nap, poor little thing.

Update: she's woken up now and I got a smile out of her.

Update2 (Jan 14 evening): She was OK at nursery but very tired this evening and wouldn't take her usual amount of milk but I think we're over the worst.

Update3 (Jan 16 afternoon): She was sick again yesterday and generally been out of sorts and, how shall I put it, high maintenance.

    Nappy count breaks 1,800

End of week 47 and the nappy count is 1,801.

Looks like Katie will reach her first birthday before the 2,000th nappy.

    Eating our review: Costa Coffee

Costa Coffee isn't somewhere I go for a meal but it is popular with, among other demographics, parents with babies who want to sit down and take a break.

It is well suited for this, although if they could provide more high chairs that would be helpful.

Urs goes there a lot with Katie and I have accompanied them quite a few times.

Last time we were there we did manage to grab the only high chair we could find. It's quite a cavernous contraption but Katie liked it.

There isn't anything on the menu that she would have but nobody seems to mind if you bring your baby food and drink with you (usually water, a biscuit and a banana).

The staff are friendly and helpful.

And the capuccino is good enough to keep me quiet for a couple of minutes.

    Eating out review: Wagamama

Last month we took her to Wagamama.

Not because we specifically wanted to continue to broaden her foreign food tastes but because I like going there.

They have handy chairs that strap on to their tables for little ones. They're made by Phil & Ted's, the same brand as Katie's buggy (which made it into the background of some of the pics below).

There is a menu for children. Not sure we (for which read "I") ordered the best thing off it for Katie but she ate some of it and tucked into the vegetable gyozas her mum would have otherwise enjoyed eating.

And when all else fails there's always chopsticks to play with.

Katie left quite a mess under the table but the staff were very understanding and just got on with sweeping it up as we left.

All in all a good place to go. We'll go again.

    A hat-trick

I wondered what would Katie look like in my Wycombe Wanderers woolly hat.

    Dangerous corners

And now Katie can haul herself up it's time to make sharp corners safer.

    Can't stop standing

Cots and stairgates provide good opportunities to practise standing up.
